Did an AMZN EPS beat hide capex risks? Unpack Amazon Q2 2026 earnings, surging AWS margins, and the $53.4B Anthropic gain. Read our complete data analysis.
The Amazon Q2 2026 earnings report, released July 30, 2026, for the quarter ended June 30, delivered the company's first-ever $200 billion revenue quarter and, on the surface, one of the most dramatic earnings beats in its history. Net sales rose 20% year-over-year to $200.6 billion, comfortably ahead of the roughly $196.5 billion analysts had modeled, while operating income climbed 43% to $27.5 billion.
It is the bottom-line figure, however, that demands the most scrutiny and the most explanation. A quarter that produces a 244% jump in net income is not, on its face, a story about ordinary operating momentum, and readers deserve to know why before drawing conclusions about the durability of that growth.
| Metric | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | Change |
| Net Sales | $200.6B | $167.7B | 0.2 |
| Operating Income | $27.5B | ~$19.2B | 0.43 |
| Net Income (GAAP) | $62.6B | $18.2B | 2.44 |
| Diluted EPS (GAAP) | $5.75 | $1.68 | 2.42 |
| Adjusted EPS (vs. consensus) | $1.97 | — | vs. $1.82 est. |
| AWS Revenue | $42.2B | ~$30.8B | 0.367 |
| Advertising Revenue | $19.8B | ~$15.7B | 0.26 |
The single most important fact in this earnings release is one that a headline EPS figure alone will not convey: of the $62.6 billion in net income Amazon reported, $53.4 billion came from a non-operating, non-cash, pre-tax gain tied primarily to the appreciation of Amazon's equity investment in the artificial intelligence company Anthropic. This is a mark-to-market accounting gain the value of a minority stake rising on paper, not cash generated from selling books, cloud capacity, or advertising placements.
Strip that gain out, and the more analytically honest comparison is the adjusted figure Wall Street actually measured against consensus: $1.97 per share versus the $1.82 analysts polled by LSEG had projected. That is a real, respectable beat roughly 8% ahead of expectations but it is a fundamentally different story than "EPS more than tripled forecasts," which is technically true of the raw $5.75 GAAP figure but analytically misleading without this context.
Why does this distinction matter to a reader deciding how to interpret the quarter? Three reasons:
If there is a genuine headline in this earnings cycle, it belongs to Amazon Web Services. AWS revenue reached $42.2 billion, up 36.7% year-over-year its fastest growth rate in roughly 18 quarters and a fifth consecutive quarter of acceleration, up from 28% growth just one quarter earlier. AWS operating income rose to $16.6 billion at a 39% margin, up roughly 650 basis points year-over-year, and the segment's backlog swelled to $496 billion, growing at a triple-digit pace.
CEO Andy Jassy described AWS as "booming," specifically highlighting that both the AI services business and Amazon's in-house silicon lines Trainium and Graviton chips individually crossed $25 billion annualized revenue run rates, each still expanding at triple-digit rates.
This quarter's cloud results did not happen in a vacuum. Heading into Amazon's report, investors were primed by an unusually strong cloud season from rivals: Alphabet's Google Cloud posted 82% year-over-year growth in its most recent quarter, and Microsoft's Azure grew 43%. Against that backdrop, AWS's 37% growth while genuinely impressive and its best showing in years still trails both peers on a headline growth-rate basis, even as it remains by far the largest cloud franchise by absolute revenue and backlog.
| Hyperscaler Cloud Segment | Most Recent YoY Growth | Notable Context |
| AWS (Amazon) | 37% (36.7%) | $169B annualized run rate; $496B backlog |
| Google Cloud (Alphabet) | 82% | Benefiting from in-house TPU/model stack |
| Azure (Microsoft) | 43% | Large OpenAI-linked backlog exposure |
The competitive read here is nuanced rather than alarming: AWS's scale advantage, backlog growth, and margin expansion argue for a durable moat, but Google's growth rate built partly on vertically integrated infrastructure (its own chips and models, without third-party licensing costs) is a genuine data point the cloud market is watching closely for signs of share-shifting.
A meaningful share of AWS's reacceleration traces to Amazon's push into custom AI infrastructure. Both its AI services and its Trainium/Graviton chip lines independently exceeded $25 billion annualized run rates, with management citing adoption from major AI labs. This vertical integration designing chips in-house rather than relying entirely on third-party silicon is central to Amazon's argument that its infrastructure investment will ultimately support superior margins relative to hyperscalers more dependent on external suppliers.
North America revenue grew 16% year-over-year to $116.2 billion, with a 7.9% operating margin, up from 7.5% a year earlier. On its face, this looks like solid, steady retail execution. But this figure carries an important comparability caveat that should not be glossed over.
Amazon shifted its Prime Day promotional event into the second quarter this year, whereas last year's event fell in the third quarter. That timing shift pulled meaningful sales volume forward into Q2 2026 that would otherwise have landed in Q3. Amazon's own guidance makes the scale of this distortion explicit: management indicated that Q3 2026 year-over-year growth would look roughly 400 basis points higher if this calendar shift were excluded from the comparison. Investors and readers evaluating North America's "16% growth" figure should treat it as somewhat inflated relative to underlying demand trends, with the offsetting drag due to show up in next quarter's year-over-year comparison instead.
International segment revenue, by contrast, grew 15% year-over-year to $42.2 billion, with a thinner 4.1% operating margin a reminder that Amazon's overseas retail operations still run at structurally lower profitability than the domestic business.
Perhaps the most consequential forward-looking disclosure in this report was Amazon's decision to raise full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance to approximately $220 billion, up from a prior estimate of roughly $200 billion, with management attributing the increase specifically to rising memory-chip costs rather than newly added projects.
A figure this large is difficult to evaluate in isolation. Contextualized against the rest of the hyperscaler cohort, it becomes clearer why Wall Street is treating 2026 as a defining year for AI infrastructure economics:
| Company | 2026 Capex Guidance (approx.) | Notes |
| Amazon | ~$220B | Raised from ~$200B on memory-inflation |
| Alphabet (Google) | ~$185B–$205B | Raised multiple times through the year |
| Microsoft | ~$190B | Also cited component/memory cost pressure |
| Meta | ~$139B–$145B | Smaller cloud footprint than the other three |
Collectively, the largest technology companies are directing several hundred billion dollars toward AI data center buildout in 2026 alone a scale of coordinated capital deployment with few historical precedents outside of national infrastructure programs. Management's own framing is instructive: even at $220 billion, Amazon has said it still will not have sufficient capacity to meet current demand through 2026, and likely into 2027, implying the spending trajectory is not yet near its ceiling.
This capex arms race hasn't stayed confined to tech-sector balance sheets it has been rippling into broader risk markets too. Per CoinDesk, bitcoin and broader equities wobbled during a session marked by rising anxiety over AI spending levels, even as a stronger-than-expected Intel revenue print helped calm sentiment industry-wide with Alphabet's own larger AI budget cited as a factor propping up the chip trade. The above reflects CoinDesk's reported market observation and is not investment advice, but it illustrates how closely correlated hyperscaler capex headlines have become with sentiment across both tech equities and adjacent risk assets like bitcoin.
Looking ahead, Amazon guided third-quarter net sales to a range of $197 billion to $202 billion representing roughly 9% to 12% year-over-year growth alongside operating income guidance of $22.5 billion to $26.5 billion. At the midpoint, that operating income guidance of roughly $24.5 billion sits above the approximately $24.9 billion analyst consensus figure referenced heading into the print, though modestly below where some had modeled on revenue given the sequential deceleration from Q2's $200.6 billion.
Two explicit distortions are embedded in that Q3 growth-rate comparison, both of which Amazon flagged directly: the aforementioned ~400 basis point drag from the Prime Day timing shift, and an unfavorable foreign exchange headwind of approximately 80 basis points. Investors modeling underlying demand trends should adjust for both rather than taking the reported growth range at face value.
No earnings analysis meeting professional research standards can responsibly omit a rigorous accounting of downside risk. Several material headwinds emerged directly from this report and deserve explicit attention.
Perhaps the most significant fundamental concern buried beneath the headline beat: trailing-twelve-month free cash flow swung to an outflow of $7.6 billion, compared with an $18.2 billion inflow in the prior-year period. This reversal was driven primarily by a $66.1 billion year-over-year increase in capital expenditures. While operating cash flow remains robust up 33% to $161.4 billion on a trailing basis the fact that capital intensity has fully absorbed, and now exceeded, that cash generation is a structural change in Amazon's financial profile that shareholders should monitor closely.
Deploying $220 billion in a single year is an extraordinary bet on sustained AI and cloud demand. Management has offered break-even framing servers reportedly reaching payback in under three years, with data centers monetized over multi-decade horizons but the market has shown real sensitivity to capex escalation this earnings season, with peer stocks reacting negatively even after beating estimates when capex guidance surprised to the upside. The risk is not that the spending is irrational, but that near-term margin and free-cash-flow pressure could persist longer than currently modeled if demand growth decelerates even modestly.
Industry analysts have flagged that elevated memory-chip pricing could pressure full-year AWS operating margins by an estimated 50 to 150 basis points beyond current consensus assumptions a cost pressure Amazon shares with Microsoft and other infrastructure-heavy peers. This is a headwind embedded in input costs rather than demand, meaning it is less discretionary and harder for management to fully offset without either raising prices or accepting thinner margins.
The $53.4 billion Anthropic-related gain that inflated this quarter's net income is a mark-to-market valuation, not realized cash. Private AI-sector valuations have proven volatile industry-wide; a future markdown, however unlikely in the near term, would flow through the income statement in the opposite direction and could produce a jarring headline net-income decline in a future quarter that has nothing to do with Amazon's underlying operations.
While AWS's 37% growth is a genuine positive, Google Cloud's 82% growth rate nearly double AWS's pace raises a legitimate competitive question that this earnings report does not fully answer: whether Google's vertically integrated model-and-chip stack is beginning to win a disproportionate share of new enterprise AI workloads. AWS's far larger absolute scale provides a buffer, but sustained divergence in growth rates over several more quarters would warrant closer scrutiny.
Because Prime Day sales were pulled forward into Q2, North America retail faces a structurally tougher year-over-year comparison in Q3 and potentially into the holiday season, independent of underlying consumer demand trends.
Setting aside the accounting noise, the underlying competitive picture that emerges from this quarter is one of a business executing well across multiple fronts simultaneously. Advertising revenue grew 26% to $19.8 billion, a high-margin business that monetizes purchase intent already present on Amazon's retail platform without requiring incremental infrastructure spend comparable to AWS. AWS's operating margin expansion up 650 basis points even amid heavy capital investment suggests management is achieving genuine efficiency gains rather than simply buying growth. And the mix shift toward cloud and advertising, both structurally higher-margin than core retail, provides a plausible pathway toward company-wide margin expansion even if retail margins merely hold steady.
The market's initial reaction shares moving sharply higher in extended trading, with reported gains ranging from roughly 7% to more than 10% depending on the data provider and measurement window reflected a judgment that the quality of the operating quarter outweighed the accounting noise around net income. That said, initial after-hours moves can be volatile and are not always predictive of where a stock settles once full markets have had time to digest guidance details, including the capex increase.
The Amazon Q2 2026 earnings results present a genuinely strong operating quarter wrapped inside a headline that overstates its own magnitude. AWS's reacceleration to 37% growth, expanding margins, and a $496 billion backlog represent real, durable business momentum. Advertising's continued double-digit growth adds a second high-margin engine. At the same time, the $53.4 billion non-operating gain that drove the eye-catching net income and EPS figures should not be mistaken for operating strength, and the reversal of free cash flow into negative territory alongside a $220 billion capital spending plan represents a legitimate structural shift in Amazon's financial profile that will take several quarters to fully evaluate.
Readers assessing this Amazon Q2 2026 earnings report should weight the adjusted $1.97 EPS figure, the 43% operating income growth, and the AWS acceleration far more heavily than the raw $5.75 GAAP EPS headline when forming a view of business quality.
