PayPal Q2 2026 earnings show $8.68B in revenue and an EPS beat of $1.38, lifting full-year outlook despite margin risks. Get the official figures here.
PayPal Holdings (NASDAQ: PYPL) delivered its PayPal Q2 2026 earnings results before the opening bell on July 28, and the numbers landed cleanly ahead of Wall Street's consensus on nearly every headline metric. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.38 against a Street estimate of $1.28, revenue rose 5% year-over-year to $8.68 billion versus an expected $8.47 billion, and management raised full-year guidance for the first time in this earnings cycle. Shares rose roughly 4-4.5% at Tuesday's open before settling in the high-$50s.
None of that, however, happened in a vacuum. The quarter arrived thirteen days after PayPal's board reportedly rejected a joint $53.4 billion take-private proposal from Stripe and private equity firm Advent International, and it landed on the same day the Federal Reserve's July policy meeting concluded a backdrop of elevated interest rates that continues to shape how investors discount payments-sector cash flows. This article walks through what PayPal actually reported, what management said on the call, and the specific risks a disciplined analyst has to weigh before drawing any conclusions.
PayPal's second quarter covered the three months ended June 30, 2026. The core figures, drawn from the company's official earnings release and investor materials, are summarized below.
| Metric | Q2 2026 Actual | Analyst Estimate | Year-over-Year |

The company also declared a quarterly dividend of $0.14 per share, payable September 25, and repurchased roughly 33 million shares for approximately $1.5 billion during the quarter—a signal that capital return remains a management priority even amid the reinvestment push.
For the full year, PayPal raised its adjusted EPS guidance to $5.38, up from a prior outlook that had called for a low-single-digit decline to modestly positive growth versus 2025's $5.31. Full-year transaction margin dollars are now guided to roughly $15.6 billion, also an upward revision.
The revenue and earnings beat was not evenly distributed across PayPal's businesses, and a careful read of the segment detail tells a more nuanced story than the headline "beat and raise" framing suggests.
Venmo Debit Card monthly active accounts grew more than 50% year-over-year, a standout figure that reflects PayPal's push to deepen engagement with its peer-to-peer user base rather than simply relying on transfer volume. Braintree, PayPal's payment-processing infrastructure business serving large enterprise merchants, posted total payment volume growth in the mid-teens—continuing a pattern where PayPal's "invisible" processing rails have outgrown its consumer-facing brand.
CEO Enrique Lores told analysts that branded checkout "has further stabilized," a carefully chosen phrase that stops short of claiming reacceleration. This is the business segment that has lost the most ground to Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Shopify's Shop Pay in recent years, and stabilization rather than renewed growth is the more modest claim management is actually making for this specific unit.
PayPal reiterated that it remains on course to achieve $400 million in gross run-rate savings during 2026, part of a longer-term target of at least $1.5 billion in savings to be realized over the following two to three years. Much of this program is tied to a broader restructuring that reorganized the company into three units—checkout and the core PayPal brand; consumer financial services including Venmo; and payments and crypto—alongside efforts to embed artificial intelligence into coding, customer service, and risk-management functions. Activating this reorganized crypto division is already underway; per CoinDesk, PayPal claims its dollar-pegged PYUSD token will facilitate more affordable cross-border transfers and quicker settlements for merchants as it expands into 70 markets.
No discussion of PayPal Q2 2026 earnings would be complete without addressing the elephant in the room. In mid-July, Stripe and Advent International jointly submitted a proposal to acquire PayPal for $60.50 per share in cash, valuing the company at more than $53 billion—a 28% premium to PayPal's prior closing price, backed by approximately $50 billion in committed bank financing. PayPal's board, working with Goldman Sachs and Evercore as advisors, reportedly concluded the offer undervalued the company.
On the earnings call, Lores did not confirm or deny the specifics of any offer, stating plainly that PayPal does not comment on market speculation. He did, however, address the broader posture of the board toward inorganic options. Asked about the company's openness to a transaction, Lores said: "We remain open and objective in evaluating opportunities"—adding that the board would carefully weigh any path management believed would create greater shareholder value than executing the current standalone strategy.
That is the full extent of what was disclosed on the call regarding the takeover question. Management did not indicate what price or structure it might consider adequate, did not comment on timing, and did not address whether Stripe and Advent have made or plan to make a revised approach. Neither Stripe nor Advent had issued public comment on the board's stance as of this writing. Readers should treat anything beyond these disclosed facts—including any commentary on whether a sweetened bid might follow—as speculation outside the scope of what management has actually confirmed.
Following the earnings beat, PayPal shares traded in the high-$50s, up from Monday's close near $56. Using the newly raised FY26 adjusted EPS guidance of $5.38, the stock's forward earnings multiple sits in roughly the 10-11x range—a significant discount to PayPal's own five-year average price-to-earnings ratio, which has historically run closer to the high-20s. Pre-earnings data pegged the company's enterprise value at roughly 7.5x EV/EBITDA, with a market capitalization in the low-$50-billion range before the post-earnings share price move.
| Valuation Metric | Approximate Level (pre/post Q2 print) |
| Forward P/E (on new $5.38 FY26 guide) | ~10-11x |
| 5-Year Average P/E | ~27-28x |
| EV/EBITDA | ~7.5x |
| Market Capitalization | ~$51-53 billion range |
| Shares Outstanding | ~882 million |
These figures are presented as descriptive context for where the market is currently pricing PayPal's earnings power relative to its own history—not as an indication of whether the stock is over- or undervalued, which is a judgment for each investor to reach independently.
A rigorous read of PayPal Q2 2026 earnings requires giving equal weight to the headwinds management did not fully resolve this quarter.
Looking beyond the quarter just reported, PayPal's own commentary provides the clearest guide to near-term expectations. For the third quarter, the company projected adjusted earnings would decline by a low-single-digit percentage versus the $1.34 per share reported in the prior-year period. For the full year, adjusted EPS guidance was raised to $5.38, with transaction margin dollars—a metric PayPal has emphasized as its preferred profitability gauge—guided to approximately $15.6 billion.
Lores framed the outlook in terms of execution rather than external catalysts, telling investors: "While there is still significant work ahead, I have strong conviction in our direction and in our ability to execute." That statement reflects management's own characterization of its confidence level: it is not a projection this publication is making, but a direct reflection of what the company communicated to the investment community on the call.
Wall Street's response to PayPal Q2 2026 earnings has been one of cautious recalibration rather than outright conviction shift. Ahead of the print, several analysts had already adjusted ratings in light of the takeover speculation: Truist Securities moved its rating from Sell to Hold on July 24, and Barclays moved from Underweight to Equal-Weight on July 16, both citing elevated deal-related interest in the stock alongside the fundamentals. As of the most recent tally, PayPal carries a consensus "Hold" rating across roughly two dozen covering analysts, split between a small number of Buy and Sell ratings and a large majority of Hold recommendations.
Options markets had been pricing an unusually wide expected move heading into the print—traders anticipated roughly a 9% swing in either direction, reflecting the dual uncertainty of both the earnings outcome and the unresolved M&A situation layered on top of it. That volatility premium underscores how much of the current PayPal stock narrative is being shaped by the takeover question as much as by the underlying business performance.
PayPal operates across approximately 200 markets, and the competitive dynamics playing out domestically—pressure from Apple Pay and Google Pay in branded checkout—are mirrored internationally, where European players such as Klarna and Adyen continue to compete for both consumer buy-now-pay-later volume and merchant processing relationships. A prolonged period of elevated global interest rates, with the Fed holding steady and several other major central banks maintaining restrictive policy stances through mid-2026, has weighed on valuation multiples across the broader digital payments sector, not just on PayPal specifically.
Against that backdrop, PayPal's raised guidance and improved transaction margin trajectory represent a company-specific data point working somewhat against the grain of a generally cautious macro environment for consumer-facing fintech names.
The unresolved Stripe-Advent situation also has broader industry implications: a completed transaction of that scale would rank among the largest fintech acquisitions on record and would materially reshape the competitive balance between consumer and enterprise payment infrastructure providers globally. That remains, as of this writing, an open situation rather than a completed one.
PayPal's second-quarter results were unambiguously better than what Wall Street had modeled, and the raised full-year guidance reflects genuine operational progress in specific areas—Venmo engagement, Braintree volume, and stabilizing branded checkout trends chief among them. At the same time, flat active-account growth, compressed operating margins, and an unresolved $53.4 billion takeover proposal mean the quarter answered some questions about execution while leaving the company's ultimate strategic direction genuinely undecided. Investors and analysts alike will be watching for further clarity on both fronts—sustained margin recovery and any developments in the board's evaluation of strategic alternatives—as the year progresses.
