Token Terminal and RWA.xyz show conflicting tokenized stocks market caps. Learn why supply definitions differ and what it means for RWA equity investors.
Token Terminal counted about $4.0 billion of tokenized stocks on October 17, according to Crypto Times. The RWA.xyz dashboard showed $3.44 billion a day later. Neither is an error. The trackers count different things on different dates.
The headline tokenized stocks market cap has risen roughly fivefold since January. RWA.xyz data put the total above $3.4 billion on October 20, up from over $688 million at the start of the year. The growth is real, but five issuers and three blockchains carry most of the value, wallet counts overstate the number of people, and most tokens give price exposure rather than share ownership.
The evidence points to a market between $3.4 billion and $4.4 billion depending on the source, with trading that has grown faster than the value of the tokens themselves. This article covers who holds the market, why the dashboards disagree, what supports and complicates the growth story, the main risks, and the MetaMask token speculation that the Consensys split has revived.
Four Trackers Put the Market Between $3.44 Billion and $4.43 Billion, and Definitions and Dates Explain the Gap
| Source | Figure | Snapshot | What to know |
| RWA.xyz | $3.44B | Oct 18 | “Distributed value”; bridged supply times net asset value |
| Token Terminal | $4.0B | Oct 17, 17:05 UTC | 24 issuers, 18 chains, 2,061 reference stocks |
| DWF Labs | $3.8B | Week of Oct 5 | Report published Oct 16 by a market maker and investor |
| Binance Research | $4.43B | Sept 15 | Cited by Binance’s co-CEO; Binance-linked tokens are the largest issuer block |
Three drivers produce most of the spread. Coverage differs, since Token Terminal follows 24 issuers across 18 chains. Supply definitions differ: RWA.xyz multiplies bridged circulating supply by net asset value and excludes balances it identifies as treasury holdings or pre-minted inventory. Timing differs too. RWA.xyz itself showed $3.32 billion on October 14 and $3.44 billion on October 18, a move of about 4% in four days.
Issuer data show where the gap sits. Token Terminal credits xStocks with $944.0 million, RWA.xyz with $586.7 million. That $357 million difference accounts for roughly two-thirds of the $560 million gap between the totals. None of the trackers reviewed publishes a line-by-line reconciliation. Any quoted tokenized stocks market cap is therefore a function of coverage, supply definition and snapshot date, and should travel with all three.
Five Issuers Hold About 89% of Token Terminal’s Total, and Three Chains Carry Roughly 76%
Concentration answers the first half of the headline question. In Token Terminal’s data, Binance-linked tokens, Ondo and xStocks together hold 77.8% of value. Adding Securitize and Robinhood lifts the five-issuer share to about 89% (author’s calculation). The other 19 issuers split the remaining 11%.
| Issuer | Token Terminal (Oct 17) | RWA.xyz (Oct 18) |
| Binance-linked (bStocks) | $1.2B (29.7%) | $1.2B |
| Ondo | $971.8M (24.4%) | $876.5M |
| xStocks | $944.0M (23.7%) | $586.7M |
| Securitize | $268.2M (6.7%) | $315.1M |
| Robinhood | $178.1M (4.5%) | $148.1M |
Chains tell a similar story. Token Terminal puts BNB Chain at $1.5 billion (37.5%), Ethereum at $826.9 million and Solana at $715.8 million (18%), roughly 76% combined. RWA.xyz data reported on October 14 ranked the same three chains in the same order, with BNB Chain at 39.2% and Solana at 15.0%. The dates differ by three days, which may explain part of the Solana gap.
By reference asset, ETF-linked tokens lead with $792.8 million (19.9%). Circle (CRCL) follows at $370.9 million, then SECZ at $255.2 million, Strategy (MSTR) at $249.4 million, SpaceX (SPCX) at $232.0 million, STRC at $212.2 million, Nvidia-linked tokens at $149.7 million and Tesla at $128.2 million. Those eight positions total about $2.39 billion, roughly 60% of the market (author’s calculation). A separate Dune analysis found ETFs made up 19% of tokenized equity spot supply, in line with Token Terminal.
What a holder owns varies by issuer. Binance’s launch notice for bStocks, the largest issuer block in both trackers, describes them as certificates issued by a Binance affiliate that do not give holders direct ownership of the underlying shares. The official release carries the full disclaimer.
Holder Counts Near 4.4 Million Tally Wallets, and Ondo’s Access Rules Exclude the US, UK and Canada
Token Terminal counted 4.3 million tokenized-stock holders on September 25, up from about 100,000 a year earlier, led by BNB Chain with 1.8 million, Robinhood Chain with 1.3 million and Solana with 997,000. RWA.xyz showed 4.44 million holders on October 18, up 17.92% in 30 days.
The unit is the wallet, not the person. Coverage of the Token Terminal data notes that one person with several wallets is counted more than once. An exchange or omnibus address can also stand in for many customers, depending on how a tracker treats it.
Geography matters for English-speaking readers. When Ondo’s tokenized stocks arrived in MetaMask in February, access was restricted in the US, UK, European Economic Area, Canada, China, Russia and numerous other countries. The IMF found that Ondo and Backed together hold more than 70% of tokenized equity value, that their products target investors outside the US, and that round-the-clock access is a source of demand, especially in time zones far from New York. The holder base therefore likely skews toward buyers outside the largest English-speaking markets. That is an inference, since the trackers reviewed do not publish holders by country.
Weekend Trading Reached $1.01 Billion While US Exchanges Were Closed, and Volume Is Growing Faster Than Value
CoinGecko data compiled by The Defiant show the 42 largest tokenized equities traded $490.3 million on Saturday and $516.9 million on Sunday of Labor Day weekend, a $1.01 billion total. Friday’s session, with US markets open, saw $1.02 billion.
The DWF Labs report frames the same trend over a longer span. It puts value at $3.8 billion in the week of October 5, up 483% from $654 million in January, with weekly spot trading on decentralized exchanges at $2.54 billion, 55 times the January level, and weekly onchain transfers up 41.8 times to $17.5 billion. The Defiant’s coverage also notes DWF’s finding that Ondo’s issuer share fell from 56% to 26% as rivals entered. DWF is a market maker with a commercial interest in sector activity, so the report is not a neutral census.
Volume and value are different measures. The QQQB token, which tracks the Nasdaq 100 ETF, had $1.34 million of circulating value against $87.8 million of 24-hour volume, about 65 times its size. Small floats, always-open decentralized pools and fractional trades let little capital turn over many times. The IMF found that more than half of tokenized equity trading occurs outside regular US hours and that about 80% of trades involve less than one share.
A 73% Fall in 30-Day Transfer Volume and a Share of Roughly 0.003% of Global Equities Temper the Growth Story
RWA.xyz data as of October 18 show distributed value up 11.76% over 30 days and holders up 17.92%. The same data show 30-day transfer volume down 73.10% and active addresses down 57.28%. More wallets hold tokens. Far fewer are moving them.
Three readings fit that pattern. Early buyers may be holding after a September surge. The comparison window may include unusually heavy trading: weekly spot volume approached $3 billion in the week before Labor Day, according to Grayscale research cited by Crypto Briefing. Or the trackers may define volume differently. DWF’s $2.54 billion of weekly spot DEX trading in early October sits modestly below that level, which does not resemble a 73% collapse, though the series differ. No source reviewed explains the RWA.xyz decline.
Scale is the other limit. Binance Research put tokenized equities at 0.0029% of the $151.9 trillion global listed-equity market on September 15, when it counted $4.43 billion. Against the same denominator, $4.0 billion is about 0.0026% (author’s calculation). Even at the highest tracker reading, the tokenized stocks market cap equals roughly 0.003% of global listed equity.
Risks and Headwinds: Limited Ownership Rights, Thin Floats, Issuer Objections and Concentration Weigh on the Growth Case
| Risk | Status | Mechanism |
| Exposure, not shares | Confirmed | Rights depend on the issuer’s terms; the IMF describes Ondo and Backed tokens as synthetic exposure without direct share ownership |
| Higher volatility, thinner liquidity | Confirmed | IMF sample: about 1.5 times the underlying stocks’ volatility, with prices straying further on decentralized exchanges |
| Thin floats and pair-driven trading | Confirmed in examples | 65 times volume-to-value on QQQB; The Defiant reported memecoin pairs trading against tokenized stocks on Robinhood Chain |
| Issuer objections | Emerging | Alphabet, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft and others had objected to OKXICE listings, bringing the total to 16 by October 20 |
| Issuer concentration | Confirmed | Five issuers hold about 89%; one outage, legal action or custody failure would touch most of the value |
| Temporary US framework | Scenario | The exemption is conditional and open to public comment; permanent rules are not yet written |
| Trading with no pause | Scenario | Continuous trading removes exchange-hours breaks in which shocks are assessed; the IMF calls systemic risk limited for now, with its sample covering a handful of liquid tokens |
The SEC’s September 17 order allows unaffiliated third parties to tokenize listed stock without issuer consent, subject to a 30-day issuer objection right after written notice. The Block reported nine objecting companies by October 17, and the count reached 16 three days later. An objection applies only to the venue that sent the notice, so each new venue starts its own 30-day clock. The SEC framework governs US tokenized securities venues. Much of today’s $4 billion sits in offshore products aimed at non-US buyers, so objections constrain future US growth more than present supply.
The Consensys Split Revived MetaMask Token Speculation, but Neither a Token Nor a Listing Has Been Announced
Consensys announced on September 9 that it would split in two: the existing entity takes the MetaMask name and consumer products under Joe Lubin as chairman and CEO, while a newly formed Consensys takes Ethereum protocols and institutional infrastructure. Both companies expect the separation to finish by the end of 2026.
The link to this market is direct. MetaMask added more than 200 tokenized US stocks, ETFs and commodities through Ondo Global Markets on February 3 for eligible users outside restricted countries, with trading 24 hours a day, five days a week. A self-custody wallet is one channel for Ondo’s tokens.
What follows is speculation, not news. Traders have discussed a MetaMask token, often shorthanded MASK, for years, and none exists. Neither company gave an IPO date or confirmed a token alongside the split, and a spokesperson declined to comment on market speculation or capital-markets activity. Fortune has suggested a listing could come as early as 2027, though no timeline is confirmed. No source reviewed ties MetaMask’s tokenized-stock activity to a token plan, and this article offers no view on any related token’s price.
Four Readings Will Test Whether the $4 Billion Figure Is Durable: Active Addresses, Objection Counts, Issuer Share and Tracker Convergence
- RWA.xyz’s next 30-day readings for active addresses and transfer volume, to see whether the 57.28% and 73.10% declines persist or reverse.
- The objection count. A comment letter filed with the SEC on October 2 asks for a centralized register of issuer objections and the tokenized securities traded on each venue.
- Issuer share. DWF puts Ondo at 26%, down from 56% in January. Whether the five-issuer 89% share narrows will show if new entrants are broadening the market.
- Tracker convergence, starting with the $357 million xStocks gap between Token Terminal and RWA.xyz.
Until trackers share a definition, any tokenized stocks market cap quoted without its source, date and supply basis is better read as a range than as a fact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do tokenized stocks give holders actual ownership of the underlying shares?
Usually not. Most tokenized stocks in the current market give holders an economic claim on the token issuer, backed by shares held in custody, so voting rights and legal recourse depend on the issuer’s terms. The IMF describes the Ondo and Backed tokens as synthetic exposure without direct share ownership. Binance makes a similar disclosure for bStocks. The product’s legal documents set the actual rights.
Can people in the US, UK or Canada buy tokenized stocks in October 2026?
Access depends on the platform and the buyer’s country, and some of the largest offerings restrict these markets. Ondo’s tokenized stocks inside MetaMask were restricted in the US, UK, European Economic Area and Canada at their February launch. In the US, the SEC’s September 17 exemption lets tokenized securities venues offer tokenized US-listed stocks under volume limits and issuer objection rights. OKXICE, which plans to operate under the exemption, has drawn objections from multiple companies. Eligibility lists change, so a platform’s current terms govern.
What does “distributed value” mean when RWA.xyz reports tokenized stocks at $3.44 billion?
Distributed value counts tokenized assets issued to holders on public blockchain networks, while represented value counts assets recorded on-chain, mostly on permissioned ledgers. As of September 28, RWA.xyz showed $38.6 billion distributed and about $358 billion represented across all asset classes. The tokenized-stock total uses distributed value and, in RWA.xyz’s method, leaves out treasury and pre-minted balances, so it can run below trackers that count supply differently.
Are tokenized stock prices reliable when the US stock market is closed?
They track the underlying shares closely but with more volatility and thinner liquidity. The IMF’s October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report found tokenized equities about 1.5 times as volatile as the underlying stocks, and that traditional shares absorbed more than 87% of overnight tokenized price moves at the open. The sample covered five liquid tokens, and the IMF advised caution in applying the results to the wider market.
Can public companies block third-party tokenized versions of their shares under the SEC’s September 2026 exemption?
Yes, within limits. A tokenized securities venue must give the company written notice, and the company then has 30 days to object. A timely objection bars that venue from offering the token but does not bind other venues. Nasdaq has said it will opt its own shares out of the framework. The exemption itself runs through September 17, 2031, and may change after public comment.
